Unlike many distros, Fedora (and even some Red Hat Linux releases before
that) does not ship with many CD utilities "suid."

As such, you typically need to change permissions on CD devices. You
can automate this by modifying "/etc/security/console.perms" so whoever
logs in locally gets write access to your CD device(s).

That's another, _major_bonus_ of a "ports" distro!

Ports distros _only_ include custom configuration/Makefiles. They do
_not_ include the software. Their command then fetch the source from
the distributor. As such, the ports has *0* liability!

E.g., in the case of MPlayer, libdvdcss, *MP3, etc... the "ports" distro
merely provides the configuration/Makefiles, not the software. You, the
user, you use the ports system (e.g., Portage in the case of Gentoo) to
fetch the software yourself _directly_ from the distributor (or vendor).

"Packages" distro vendors/organizations have to rely on _another_ source
for the packages. E.g., for Fedora, the Livna.ORG repository was formed
by the Fedora Extras (fka the Fedora Project) for all software that did
not meet the Fedora Free Software definition.

Which makes Gentoo _outstanding_ for distros where you only add things.
Especially so when it comes to fixed builds during testing.
Once I have the build as needed, then I worry about packaging it proper.

Ugh, sometimes I just wonder if I should shoot myself. ;->

[ I ponder to think of all the people who are now saying "Hell Yes!
Please!" ;-]

Beware of advocates who justify their preference not in terms of
what they like about their "choice," but what they did not like
about another option. Such advocacy is more hurtful than helpful.
