Some glitches related to X. When I'd rebooted I'd logged into the
desktop as root. This apparently masked a udev error that changed
permissions on the reboot. udev is dynamic so for the changes to stick
you need to edit the /etc/udev/permissions.d/ files and change the
nvidia devices to 666 permissions (or do what you need to maintain your
security preferences).
