First was annoyance at X going away, then confirmation that the computer
didn't get its power cord yanked out, THEN worry as I realize the
implications of the fact that my nightly backup hard drive is elsewhere
right now.

Thanks. This is a further argument in favor of several smaller partitions
instead of one big partition. I had space for 250 MB (or whatever it was)
of compressed /-stuff, but I wouldn't have had room for the whole drive
(much less no other drive to put it on without a lot of work).

Later I thought of "find $MOUNT_POINT -xdev -inum $INODE_NUMBER" but that is
rather inefficient.

No, it was quiet, or else the error flashed by so quickly that I missed it.
Odd; it must have read that inode sometime. I guess there are some missing
files on my drive now somewhere on /dev/hda3.
