You could have had four CD's/DVD's in a machine, that's not the problem.
There's a fair chance you just broke the cable. Try swapping it with another
one.

Of course you can also stick it into another machine and see if it's still
broken. You do need to verify that they are not both primary or secondary on
the same cable. But if you see them both tha's probably not the problem
either.
