Try to put those permissions back and just add your user to the uucp group.
This is better for security. You may also find
that /etc/security/console.perms will set those permission changes you made
right back after a reboot. Check that file for your dev node. If it's
listed, it may be reset later, so you'll need to adjust that file as well.

On my FC3, I had this under "#permission definitions"
<console> 0600 <pilot> 0660 root.uucp

So /dev/pilot gets set back to
crw-rw---- root uucp
after every reboot
