Do these workstations also have their z:\ drive mapped to a samba share?
Many windows configurations stall/stutter if there is any kind of disruption
to that drive, until the connection is restored. One way to determine if
there are burps in the connection is to open a file with an exclusive lock
(a la Outlook/pst) and see if there are problems accessing the file after
these lock ups.
 As to what is causing the burps... could be network, too high a load on the
server, ???
