[SLUG] mixer-twiddling daemon

My borrowed Logitech 4.1 (four satellites and a sub) sound great, except
that when I play a stereo source (MP3s, some DVDs, some games, some WAVs) I
either have to press the "M3D" button on the right front speaker, or raise a
mixer channel that does some sort of "surround sound" thing. That is, if
I'm to hear anything from the rear speakers. And when I run across a source
that _is_ four channels, I have to undo that.

What I'd like is a daemon that watches the sound driver, and if the driver's
opened in mono or stereo, copy the audio data to the other speakers (or tell
the driver to do so), and if it's opened in four-channel mode, don't do
that. It would be nice if the rear volume followed the front, too.

Has anyone heard of such a beast?

Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.
