This was sort of the option that I was thinking about. I was thinking
of installing
XP and allowing it only the space I want, then going in and installing linux and
using it to finish up the disk set up. I want to have separate
partitions for home
and possibly opt so I can keep those areas untouched when I update the OS.

Found that SuSE which is what I have been using, finds the NTFS partition
just fine and will read it. It will not write to it though and from
what I read and
hear, I am not sure I want to write to a NTFS partition with what I understand
of it. So I will dedicate a VFAT partition for the stuff that I need
to be able to
write to from the Linux side.
