I don't know about the v2.2 units, but I know that there are minor changes
within the v3.0 units, e.g. one of my v3.0's has resistor installed for the
JTAG header and on the other unit, purchased maybe 4 months later, the
resistors are not installed. The v3.0 processor ID that reads out on the
JTAG has a leading 2 instead of a 1 indicating a newer version even though
the markings on the chip package are identical. Hence, I would not be
surprised if there are differences in the v2.2 units.

There are more substantial changes between v1 and v2. I think the ethernet
chip is entirely different. The changes don't affect most hacking projects,
though.

I presume you got your unit unbricked.
