A few things to keep in mind with respect to on-line job sites
(Monster, Dice, and Computer Jobs) and job shops:
- Many if not most of the jobs posted by the job shops are fake.
They are there just so the job shop can collect your resume.
- You need to update your resume at least once a week to keep it
looking current to the folks doing the searches. Remember there are
many folks out of work and working folks looking for their next gig.
You want your resume at the top of the list.
- Your resume will start out with a recruiter who deals with the
person looking for work. Next your resume will go to the account
representative which is the person that interfaces with the companies
that are looking to hire you. The account rep will either be dealing
with a human resources person or directly with the hiring technical
manager. If they loose interest in your resume at any point along the
way do not expect them to contact you. In most cases that will not
happen. Another reason that you might not get a second email or phone
call from the job shop is that you just applied for a fake job. They
just wanted your resume for their data base. The number of current
resumes in their data base is important to them because they use that
number when trying to get job requisitions from companies.
- The recruiters that deal with you will not read your resume. They
say that they do not have the time. To many resumes to deal with. If
they did read it, in most cases, they would not understand it. You
are dealing with people that match buzz words between the resume and
the job requisition. What they do is contact you and ask questions
instead of reading your resume.
- Keep in mind when you are talking hourly rate/salary with the job
shop and they say that their client is not willing to pay that much is
that they are lying. The job shop goes to great lengths to make sure
that you do not know how much an hour that they are getting from the
client and that the client does not know how much an hour that they
are paying you. For example, during the tech boom in the Atlanta, GA
market the job shops were getting $40/hour over the hourly rate of the
consultant. That is not the case anymore. The best one I ever saw as
the US Post Office was paying a company $135/hour for a senior systems
engineer. The company got a consultant via a job shop to fill the
position. My friend was getting $25/hour. The company and the job
shop made a nice hourly profit. This was my friends first consulting
gig before he figured out the ropes.
- If you want full time work go straight to the company web sites and
skip the job shops. That way you know that you are applying for a
real job and you get all the money.
