Here's specifically how I map my USB devices:

/dev/sg0 /dev/sda
/dev/sg1 /dev/sdb
/dev/sg2 /dev/sdc
/dev/sg3 /dev/sdd
64funky:/home/ejahn# sg_scan -i
/dev/sg0: scsi0 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em]
         [rmb=0 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]
/dev/sg1: scsi2 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em]
    USB2.0 CardReader CF RW 0.0> [rmb=1 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]
/dev/sg2: scsi2 channel=0 id=0 lun=1 [em]
    USB2.0 CardReader Combo 0.0> [rmb=1 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]
/dev/sg3: scsi3 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em]
    SanDisk ImageMate II 1.30 [rmb=1 cmdq=0 pqual=0 pdev=0x0]

Then go mount them and add entries into your fstab to automate the
