You could:
 * write a script or alias containing a "here" document for ftp simulating
   your commands
 * use some userland utility (chat? the aforementioned ncftpput? some
   scripting utility I've used but forgotten the name of?) to talk to ftp,
   and which would have better error handling than '<<'
 * add an alias to ~/.netrc
 * there was once upon a time an "ftpfs", but I don't know what became of
   it. I suspect it is rather flaky.

I vote for #3, as I've never used ncftpput (it may be better for all I
know), and I've used ~/.netrc.
