The top links are just the category drilldown and bread crumbs. As
something that few will use, a smaller font seemed more appropriate.

Eh? What browser are you using? Works fine for me in Mozilla, Firefox,
and Safari at a reasonable resolution.
The problem is with CSS relative layout and the various browsers. If
your screen is too small, the articles show up below the left bar, which
is a bit wacky. I'm no CSS expert (it's rather quite horrid when you
look at it).
The idea isn't to hide the content at all. If that is happening to you,
my apologies.
