About a year ago I bought an HP LaserJet 1012 which is very nice and
compact (about the same footprint as my DeskJet 5550) and prints up
to 1200 x 1200 using resolution enhancement technology for between
$150 and $200. It does work with Linux most of the time (sometimes
the printer will spit out a sheet that it doesn't recognize PCL
(because, technically, it doesn't), but after cycling the power it
doesn't complain again). Toner for it is around $65 (or much less if
you know where to look) and lasts me about two months.
