HTML rendering is turned on by default; you have to explicitly opt to
read in text-only, unless you're reading Usenet where text-only is
default. The only mail client I know of that reads text-only by
default is Pine.

The problem is that while most readers (even Pine) support reading
HTML, not all of them support backgrounds (the Apple Mail I'm using
right now is one of those, as is Gmail). The other issue is that a
lot of people who use HTML mail attempt to use it as a showcase for
their formatting talent (or, rather, lack thereof, usually in the
form of overkill) and produce e-mail that is impossible to read
without needing morphine afterward for your aching head. I also get
e-mails frequently that are nearly a meg in size because of all the
fancy graphics they try to throw in instead of just relaying the
information they need to relay.

Anyhow, it sounds to me like the horse died long ago and it's no
longer useful to keep beating it. Next topic, please?
