Man may have been kinder to man but not to women,
children, or animals. We did leave doors unlocked but
that was because we left the women at home to run the
house and do "women's work." Women were laughed out
of universities and considered unfit to run for public
office or own a business even after they got the vote.
There were no child abuse laws and children who were
sexually mistreated by a family member or friend had
no agency to turn to. Cart horses could be beaten to
death in the streets and dogs were regularly kicked,
starved and mistreated. Bear baiting was a fun
pasttime.
