Reading the file directly in the Acrobat Reader allows the reader to have
direct control over the process. Reading it as a browser plug-in, Reader
has to wait until the browser reads the entire file before it can see the
last page. In other words, the browser controls the file transfer, and
Reader has no control over the transfer.
Of course, I could be wrong... Again...

Wow, thanks, I've got some reading to do... If it is a feature of the PDF
file format, why would it not work when running over HTTP?
