[SLUG] Linux, my router, or the network?

I encountered a strange problem tonight and I'm not sure where to start
looking for the culprit.

My linux box was taking a long time to:
A) start up network services such as mountd and nfsd (5+ minutes)
B) getting to external websites (i.e. Google.com) (2-3 minutes)
C) slow in accessing external sites even via ip address (i.e. ssh or ftp)

I played around and eventually came up with the idea to unset the machine's
domain name server. Things immediately started to behave normally (with, of
course, the exception that I couldn't resolve domain names).

Other machines on the network seemed to be behaving normally.

My linux machine is connected to my router, and had it's dns server set to
my router address. My router is connected to verizon fios and has it's dns
server set to whatever dchp sets it to.

I'm at a loss as to where to begin looking for the problem. First thing
tomorrow I will reset everything on the network, and start bringing pieces
online one at a time to see if I can isolate any specific component, but
beyond that I have no idea where to go.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd be thrilled to hear 'em.

Thanks.
