Re: [SLUG] Hosting Control Panel Software

I tried ISPConfig, WebCP and VHCS when I was evaluating products for my
hosting
company. And even though I love Slackware and preferred to use it, most
control panel software won't install on it without some serious hacking so I
was forced to use Debian, Red Hat or SuSE. (I chose Debian.)

Eventually I settled on the commercial Plesk product. It was more
polished, had
more features, telephone support and (this was the biggest thing) *it
installed
correctly the first time*. VHCS is a close second, but it's not really ready
for prime time. There were too many bugs to iron out after a supposedly
successful installation. WebCP is just worthless. ISPConfig was ok, but
didn't offer enough features to compete with other commercial hosting
companies.

I'd love to switch to a totally Open Source hosting panel, but not until one
reaches the level of Plesk or Cpanel. VHCS will probably be that
product. Heck, I even tried to use Webmin/Usermin, but it's not a
hosting control panel.

Richard Morgan
