The #1 reason to run two cards in SLI mode is to increase your framerates in
games or other 3d rendering programs because it splits the rendered scene
between the 2 cards. This article gives you a good preview of the technology

If you're not an Autocad-type or a hardcore gamer then it's not for you, IMHO.
