[SLUG] XMMS and song titles

I'm trying to use conditional display in XMMS.
/usr/share/doc/xmms/README.gz and Preferences -> Title both say "%?x(...) -
Display what's inside parentheses if field (%x) is set", so I'm trying to do
that. I have (right now, I'm going back to the basics) title=

%?p(%p)

but that displays as

$pp(Giuseppe Torelli)

(or whoever). What am I doing wrong? I get the same result on MP3s I made,
and those other made.
