Maybe it's snobbery. Maybe it's xenophobia. Maybe they (the IT people)

evaluated bandwidth per person divided by utility. Whatever. I was
only
commenting on "it's only ASCII text", which it's not. Even in standard
IM
operation, it uses 8-bit text, beyond the realm of ASCII.
