C/C++ are very steep gradients. I'd probably go with python for a few reasons.
It's very current as far as applicable today, and tomorrow. Very flexible and
powerful. You cannot loose knowing python and there are only few things that
cannot be done with it.

Perl is a good reporting language, but I got my reservations about it.

Ruby is looking very intersting but does not have the same visibility.
