Yes, it cleans up after itself.
I have read that there is a script for Thunderbird as well, but haven't
tried it so can't vouch for it. I found this script and a lot of other good
tips on linuxquestions.org which is a great Linux resource.

I opened a root window and ran "sh /tmp/<scriptname>". No need to make it
executable. Have to be root because it fiddles with stuff in /usr/bin.
