OK, it did this, and that's with the replacement (flat) cable:

May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: hdb: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: hdb: DMA timeout error
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: hdb: dma timeout error: status=0xd0 { Busy }
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: hda: DMA disabled
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: hdb: DMA disabled
May 27 06:12:10 pc kernel: ide0: reset: success

I'll rewire the devices to separate cables to make sure it's hdb alone, but
it looks like it is.

Two atoms are walking along. Suddenly, one stops. The other says, "What's wrong?" "I've lost an electron." "Are you sure?"
