[SLUG] newsreaders vs verizon.net

I just switched over to FiOS (from verizon.net). Their NNTP, POP and
SMTP servers require authentication. OK, how do I enable those? At least
pine asks me for username/password for the SMTP server (that's how I'm able
to send this). There was always a password on the POP server, so no change
for fetchmail. But trn barfs on their news server, saying

Connecting to news...Done.
Failed to open news server news:
480 Authentication Required

I find on the net lots of things saying trn supports AUTHINFO GENERIC, but
nowhere do I see how. The closest is
http://www.io.com/support/docs/shell_news_auth.html, but the method they say
has no effect. The file is being accessed:

open("/home/eben/.trn/access", O_RDONLY) = 3

I copied /usr/share/trn4/HelpFiles/samples/access to ~/.trn/access, but
could not make much sense of it.

Has anyone done this, or something similar?

If trn can't do it for some reason, I don't really mind switching to another
CLI newsreader.
