Figured it out. I make/modify .trn/access so it has:

[default]
NNTP Server = news.verizon.net
Auth User = myUsername
Auth Password = myPassword

make sure NNTPSERVER is not set (I'm not sure that it is right now), remove
the list of "read" articles in ~/.newsrc and start again (or don't remove
them and start with everything marked "read"), and Robert's your mother's
brother.
