I was going to ask about my system not panning, but it turns out the front
speakers pan just fine but they have a center speaker right near them, so
it's hard to hear. The rears are a lot further apart and they don't pan at
all. Also, the volume control in whatever program I'm using only controls
the front speakers; to adjust the rears, I have to fiddle with the fader on
the speakers, or use the "Wave Surround" channel in the mixer.
The 2->4 channel promotion I'm using is detailed in
http://alsa.opensrc.org/FAQ028 . Does anyone know of a less buggy command
sequence?
