[SLUG] Of Drivers and Versions

Folks,
My laptop uses the intel IPW2200 Wifi equipment and drivers. I have been
trying to use Kismet, but the error I get is that it is unable to open monitor
we.. as it turns out the ipw2200 drivers that are 1.0.4 or older do not support
RFmon (the monitor function) I have checked and it appears that the driver
module that is installed is 1.0.1. The driver is at the 1.2 level. I have looked
at the update (I am running SuSE 10.1) and it appears that it has pulled
down the latest drivers and installed them, but I am wondering if it is just
installing new behind (rather than over) old based on this data:

RF-mobile:/ # find -iname ipw*
./etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-ibss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-ibss_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-sniffer.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-sniffer_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-bss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw2100-1.3.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-boot.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-ibss_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.2-bss_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.2-ibss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw2100-1.3-i.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw2100-1.3-p.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.2-bss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw3945.ucode
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-ibss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.2-boot.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-sniffer_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-bss.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-boot.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.4-bss_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.2-ibss_ucode.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-sniffer.fw
./lib/firmware/ipw-2.3-bss_ucode.fw
./lib/modules/2.6.16.27-0.6-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2100.ko
./lib/modules/2.6.16.27-0.6-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200.ko
./lib/modules/2.6.16.27-0.6-default/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/ipw.ko

It would appear from looking at the ipw2200 2.4 rpm that 1.2 is what should
be in there, but I see that it also has in the same directory what looks like
the files for the older versions, and more than ever I am wondering if it is
installing the originals rather than the latest and greatest at start up time.
