I used nvidia-settings since I have a nVidia card.

Monitor detection and settings are not very layman friendly. Usually I end up
doing it manually in xorg.conf.

Another solution might be to throw in another video card and let it be the
primary until booted. (I've not done much in that arena as I already have two
monitors with my card.)

Spell checking is missing a couple of things but I got the answer to that on
the forum. I'm afraid I've not caught on yet on using the portage the package
manager. I need to look up how to updates each time... Fortunately there are
not many instances where I need to add or remove packages here. :)
