Do you have the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss modules loaded (or built in)?
Do you have write permission to /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer?
Is the mixer volume unmuted?
I assume you've checked all the other obvious things, like are the
speakers plugged in, turned on, and unmuted, etc...
