Fixed it. I'm thinking the culprit was the "NoScript" extension to Firefox.
I just "kill -HUP"ped firefox-bin and reran it. Pretty shabby that an
ordinary process run as a nonpriviliged user can take out an OS service. I
just DoSed myself...

Can't duplicate it though, and NoScript is mute even though it says it can
make sound. Ah well, I'd rather have NoScript quiet and everything else
able to make sound than vice versa.
