16:9, normal HDTV shape. Most (all?) widescreen monitors are actually
16:10 (=8:5), but it's close.

Are you _sure_ it's supposed to be 1280x768?

Where is the mode "1280x768" defined? Check X's log file to see what
became of it. It could be that:

(1) it isn't, so
(2) X uses the best match to the info in EDID, so
(3) X uses 1280x720
