Here's my 2cents - locate the manual for the projector. Find out what
the horizontal sync and vertical refresh settings are for this
projector.

Use those values to specify the following parameters in your xorg.conf
under the monitor subsection:

HorizSync <# range>
VertRefresh <# range>

Example:

HorizSync 30-107
VertRefresh 48-120

Also, I believe the closest mode supported by xorg is 1280x800. It is
the mode I use for both my laptop screen and DLP TV at home. For my TV
at home, I have to adjust the borders slightly to fit.
