Hello All
A great deal of legislative sleuthing has uncovered this story from our
state legislative session:

A Florida legislator proposed language that would have mandated the use
of open file formats, but the proposal was defeated in committee (with a
little help from our friends in MS).

Moreover, the official analysis of the proposal is utterly confused,
mistaking open standards for FOSS (or as the analysis calls it, "open
software").

All of this has happened quietly, with no public advocacy or news
coverage whatsoever.

The full story is here:
http://uf.freeculture.org/2007/04/01/legislature-2007-state-of-florida-it/

Don't be confused by the timestamp on the post: it's no April Fool's
joke, as you'll find if you check the references throughout the post.

Be sure to look for the ESR reference in the official analysis.

Florida Freeculture is currently working on bringing something like this
back for the state university system.
We would appreciate any help we can get, especially from Roblimo ;)

- Eldo Varghese

P.S please pass this on to other florida LUGs
