aptitude install $DEBIAN_KERNEL
# or build a kernel using make-kpkg
aptitude install build-essential module-assistant
module-assistant auto-install nvidia

# This usually only fails when module assistant cannot determine your
# kernel version. Provided you install a debian kernel, this should not
# happen. If you use make-kpkg, it is possible.
# if you install a kernel without debianizing it, then apt/etc will not
# know about it.
# This should apply to ubuntu as well.
