1. Get, acquire, steal, pirate copy of Partition Magic.
2. Install under Windows.
3. Re partition HD in to TWO partitions. One for Windidows and one for all
else. I usually set the Windows partition at 10 to 15 GB.
4. Insert OpenSuSE, Fedors, Ubuntu, or Mandriva cd into CD reader. I perfer
Mandrake.
5. Start set up and repartition HD such that Windows (from above - DO NOT
TOUCH WINDOWS PARTITION) at 10 to 15 GB. Then I set a data partition in the
middle for all GB not in either Windows or Linux. Next set the Linux boot
partition to be 100 MB, root to be 10 to 20 GB ( I perfer t20 GB with today's
HD), swap at 1 to 2 GB, and home to 10 to 20 GB. I also set the mount point
to the data partition which is FAT32 at /home/<user log in name>/Data.

This should work just fine. It has on my dual boot laptop for some time.

There is a question as to which distribution you install which is usually
answered by the one which works best with your hardware.

If you decide you do not like one distribution simply pop the old DVD into the
reader and install another. I believe I have had at least 20 on this laptop
over the years.
