I tried this exact method in January 2006 on a new Compaq box with XP Home and
ran into the "immobile file" problem. Partition Magic would not work. The
partitioning tools on the SuSE 10 install disks (and another tool on a
Knoppix live CD) returned error messages about not being able to move data.
Windows' defrag utility showed "immobile files" out there toward the end of
the hard drive. The most I could carve out was a couple of megs before
running into this barrier.
I've seen this "immobile" block since about 2003 on XP machines, starting with
XP Home and now on XP Pro, and if I missed something, I'd like to know how to
work around this problem.
