Well, this seems too obvious, so it's probably not the answer. But in
Thunderbird for Linux, I can go into Edit -> Preferences, choose the
Privacy section, and then the General tab. One choice is: Block loading
of remote images in email messages. Another is: Allow remote images if
the sender is in my Personal Address Book. Both are checkboxes. If those
don't change the behavior, I can't help.
