You might consider setting up your own DNS server. Here's an overview.

Bind has it's share of security issues, so make sure it's a current version
and don't expose it to the outside world. Others may have better
suggestions for a DNS other than Bind.

That's the behavior I was trying to avoid. Then in what way is OpenDNS
different from Verizon DNS (besides the specifics of the search page)?
