I found that every time I rebooted, the nvidia driver would have to be
reinstalled. I recently traced this to something loading an out-of-date
"nvidia" module, so all I really have to do is "rmmod nvidia" and X
will start. I think it's part of some non-free modules package. It's
odd that that works at all since I have a custom kernel built from
non-patched source. I haven't tracked down the loading to find out what's
doing it.
