Although draeath explained the situation adequately, I would add that
there is an "nv" driver which comes with X which is older but adequate
for most uses. I got tired of fighting with the NVidia installer some
time back, and decided to try the built-in nv driver. It has worked fine
for me. If it works fine for your purposes, it could save you the hassle
of dealing with the NVidia installer.
