I recently bought a NetGear ReadyNas that I use to access from home server
from work. I use Mac/Linux and Windows and wanted a virtual
drive (1 terabyte) with a RAID mirror drive. It is convenient and easily
accessible.

You'll need a static IP ( or get a rolling FreeIP) and set your
router up to port forward to that device. Since I didn't want to have
an actual server or compromise any security, I have it set up to
have password access and just go straight to the drive, no web server.

You can set up the NAS as static or DHCP, assigning it an
IP within a local network and even giving it a network drive name/alias.
Sends an email report of any problems or alerts.

The NAS runs on some LINUX variant, but I don't really go
past the embedded frontend management that lets you set up
users and permissions. More info on http://www.readynas.com/
