Not usually, but they usually support a substandard of the Hayes modem
standard. My RAZR sends SMS and does phonebook stuff over that protocol.

I don't have it anymore, but somewhere I found a PDF of over 500pgs that
seemed to be an official specification. It's out there somewhere.

In windows I also have an option of talking to the phone using p2k, a
legally questionable process that lets me access the filesystem, flash
it, etc. I am not aware of any Linux tools for that, most of what is
available seems to have been 'acquired' from Motorola service centers
and internal tools, and reverse engineered.
