Well, it would be silly of them to make a card that _requires_ two monitors.
I think until I find something that says the card won't work at all with
just a TV, that I'm going to keep plugging at it.

I had some progress though. It still flashes a few time and fails, but at
least there's no error shown in the xorg log or dmesg. I get this instead,
in /var/log/syslog, one for each attempt:
