In a fit of madness a few days ago, I tried running compiz, seeing as how it
was already installed (why?) and I wanted to try it out. Well, it failed,
wouldn't run. Something about another window manager already running as I
recall. That's fine, but it also exited uncleanly and hosed some other
stuff, and the hosage persists over a restart:
- bash is not run as a login shell before X starts, so my variables arenn't
set. To run my newsreader (trn) and have it work right, I have to do "exec
bash -l" in a terminal before I can run it in that terminal only;
- my .xinitrc isn't run, which means my mouse isn't set up and some other
commands I have in there aren't run;
- and I just found out that pine (my newsreader) runs xine to view movies,
when it used to run (and I prefer) mplayer.
Is there a common, simple cause for all these symptoms?
