If they are all "buntus", you don't actually need to install the
"seperate distros" to use the functionality of the others, just head to
synaptic and install the meta packages for each.

KDE, XCFE, and Gnome are happy together on the same machine. I run
KDE4.2 on my Ubuntu box, but use Nautilus as my file manager (so I can
use NautilusSVN), and I log in to Gnome all the time.

If you don't want to use synaptic, go to a command line and type "sudo
apt-get install edubuntu-desktop edubuntu-desktop-kde kubuntu-desktop
xubuntu-desktop".

The things you can't have "all of" at the same time are the "splash
artwork", the display manager, and the desktop artwork (you have to pick
edubuntu or standard for Gnome). The core functionality stuff is all
happy together.
