[SLUG] Java application with database... should I use JDO?

As many of you know, I am writing a Java application to manage medical
data. I don't know if I should use straight MySQL to store my data
relationally, or if I should take the time to learn JDO (DataNucleus) to
store the data as objects.

The initial application is going to be fairly small, but I want to be
able to "grow" it effectively.

Does anyone have any experience with JDO? Is it worth the trouble?
