Wow, you're late to the party!

I'm using Debian unstable.

Yes, you can run fetchmail as a daemon, but no matter how you configure
the rc file, it still dumps the mail in /var/mail/fetchmail.

This is a server, so there's no logging in. This server is supposed to
fetch mail from the smarthost on the internet, and dump it to mailboxes
for the users the mail belongs to. They, in turn will use their
fetchmail or MUAs to fetch it from the server. It's actually a little
more complicated than that, with procmail and spamassassin being hit on
the way to the mail spools.

I actually ended up using a variation on (I think) Chris' idea. Not
ideal, but it should work. Fortunately, I rarely reset that machine.
