Hi Eben, Paul,

OK, you guys have convinced me, it is *sometimes* possible for *you* to
do what you are doing. I kind of wish I were able to do that myself, and
you may remember when I was trying to several months ago from all my
list posts. Right now - and for the foreseeable future, I have bigger
fish to fry than endlessly chasing my tail when I have something that,
while admittedly a kludge, gets me going in a few minutes if I *have* to
reboot.

It turned out back then that I have two monitors that are quite similar
(but not identical) running on an older Nvidia card, and the box is a
clunker (P IV, 1.7 Ghz, 1.5 GB, 60 GB) as well. I went through over 50
revisions of the xorg chasing errors all through it, with no joy.

I researched the issue for days - weeks, actually, and consulted
everyone who might know. I had dozens of FF tabs open, each with a
different take on the problem and tried all sorts of posted fixes. In
the end *nothing* ever worked except hacking it with Envy.

So hack it with Envy I did. I am glad that you have both had better
experiences than I.

I think the next time I "monitor shop" I will get a big widescreen with
as much area on one screen as these two 17" Compaq FP7317 that I have
had for years have. Oh, yeah, no problem at all setting them up in
MEPIS, but MEPIS had other problems.

My buddy set them up for me once upon a time in Gentoo as well. It took
him weeks and weeks and *he* knows what he is doing.
